We're Building for Machines, Not People

A chart showing the growing investment in data centers compared to the declining investment in office construction

I was looking at this chart the other day. It shows that we're about to spend more on data centers than on offices. Which, if you're a human who works in an office, is either a little bit insulting or a lot bit convenient, depending on how much you like wearing pants.

For years, we built these big glass towers to house people. They were monuments to human labor. They gave us things like water coolers, awkward elevator rides, and the invention of "business casual." Our cities were literally shaped by them.

Now, we're building giant warehouses for machines. They're not for people to get coffee, they're for silicon to think. This isn't just about construction. It's about where we're going to get productivity in the future. Less from people, more from chips.

How Will This Impact Us?

The consequences? They're already here. Your energy bill, your land use, even global politics. All of it is now influenced by these mysterious, windowless buildings. They're invisible, yet they're the new skyscraper.

So, while we're all still figuring out what this means, it might be a good time to make sure your financial plan is ready for a world that's becoming a little less human and a lot more… well, "computational."
